AMI – the world’s largest airfreight and express wholesaler – proved that it can offer more than just keen rates, when it took on the job of supporting the freight forwarder for the Canadian National Ladies’ Football Team, which undertook recent mini-tours of Europe and Scandinavia.

The 5 week, two-part programme began with arranging temporary Customs clearance and collection of more than 40 bags and pieces of sports- and training equipment, on behalf of the overseas agent, upon the goods’ arrival in Amsterdam from Vancouver.

Next, AMI arranged transport of the goods to the team’s hotel in Portugal by tail-lift vehicle, operated by a specialist in road transport to the country. The trip from Amsterdam took two days, and the equipment arrived in good time for the first of four games in the Algarve Cup.

The team played four games in the next seven days: Denmark (winning 1 – 0), Russia (winning 2 – 1), Portugal (0 – 0 draw) and Spain (lost 0 – 1). AMI then arranged the collection of the equipment and its return by road, for temporary storage at AMI’s Amsterdam facility.

Ten days later, in the second mini-tour, and working with its sister company Menzies Aviation, Malmo, AMI moved the team’s goods by road from Amsterdam to their next hotel in Malmo, Sweden – ready for a training camp, followed by a match against Sweden. The trip took a day, and the Canadian side triumphed (1 – 0).

The team’s final fixture, against Germany, left only a short time to transfer the equipment; so AMI collected all the kit within two hours of the end of the Malmo match, and provided a dedicated courier to Jena, Germany. The team played their final game in nearby Erfurt, losing 2 – 1 to the German side.

With the second mini-tour now over, AMI transported the equipment back to Amsterdam. Finally, AMI booked the return flight on KLM direct to Vancouver, delivering the equipment well ahead of the required deadline.

In a message to AMI staff, Maeve Glass of the Canadian Soccer Association said: “I wanted to convey our sincere thanks for the outstanding service you and your team at Menzies provided on our two recent European tours.

“Due to the nature of our travel and requirements, our logistics are more complicated than most ventures. Beginning from Vancouver to Lisbon, then to the Algarve, to Amsterdam, to Malmo and finally to Jena and back to Vancouver, it was seamless. It was terrific working with such experienced personnel who displayed a great understanding of the needs of our national football team.”

Adds AMI VP Netherlands, Rinaldo Vels: “We were very pleased to provide local support to our overseas agent customer in Europe and Scandinavia, throughout this project. This was a perfect illustration of AMI’s full, integrated capabilities: handling detailed Customs procedures, tracking cargo, arranging road transport and express door-to-door deliveries, providing storage and coordinating ground handling – in addition to our “normal” work of booking freight onto the carrier.”
